Chapter Nine

Tallis stroked the bite mark under his shirt. The giddy smile that conquered his mouth refused to leave, and that was fine with him. Okay, maybe he jumped through some alternative dimension time warp, but he wasn’t going to complain. Swallowing the idea of dragons, and that he was one of them, had been difficult. Thirty years of his life, he’d been taught the difference between reality and fiction. He’d entertained alien conspiracies and discarded the possibilities once he reached adulthood.

Now, sitting in what he could only deduce as a conference room with some ultra-fancy technology, he was seeing everything with his eyes. He believed. Despite years of reality being pounded into his head, the very fibers of his being embraced this. Embraced Zhett.

“How does that work?” Tallis asked, leaning over the table to get a better look at the screenless image hovering midair. Tyrus, the apparent tech whiz, flashed him a smile. It hadn’t taken Tallis long to catch onto the guy’s love of anything super-techy.

“The sensors within the lasers detect the slightest pressure, allowing for you to move the screens as needed.”

Tallis’s eyes slid to Gherret. The man hadn’t lifted his head out of the book that held him captivated. He’d learned quite a bit about these two in the last couple hours. Gherret reminded him of a character from one of his favorite crime shows. A walking, talking reference manual that could put the Internet to shame. He had an answer for everything.

Literally.

“Where are these lasers?” Tallis dipped his head to see under the table. “I don’t see anything.”

“They’re contained in a chip.” Tyrus pointed to a tiny square item no bigger than a penny.

“You know, the FBI would bow at both of your feet if you’d join up with them,” Tallis said, stepping beside Tyrus. “You’d be their secret weapons.”

“Unfortunately, there are many factions of your FBI that would much rather exploit their secret weapons in exchange for less enticing entities,” Gherret said in a soft, fluid voice made to lull someone to sleep.

Tallis blinked. Lost me there, buddy.

“I’m not surprised.” Gherret spared him a short glance, but the hint of a smile and the gleam in his startling green eyes smoothed his otherwise aloof demeanor. “Yes, I can read your mind. Zhett will have to teach you how to shield your thoughts.”

“Seems Zhett’ll be teaching me quite a bit.” Which led him to another thought. “Can he read minds, too?”

“He’s chaos, Tallis. His type doesn’t mix with minds,” Tyrus said. The corner of his mouth tugged down when Tallis wrinkled a brow in his direction. “His bloodline is fierce. He’s a warrior by nature. A chaos dragon. They destroy to rebuild.”

“Like a phoenix?”

“The phoenix is part of the class Aves. The phoenix is not a dragon.”

“Gher, you’re being literal again,” Tyrus said. Gherret looked up at his friend. Confusion flashed in his gaze, a curl of chestnut hair dropping over his brow. Tallis bit his lower lip to keep from smiling. The man was a genius who looked as innocent as a five-year-old.
